Human trafficking, a form of modern slavery, is one of the most horrible crimes occurring right now, all around us, in all U.S. states and territories and across the globe. It happens in cities, suburbs and rural areas.

Victims can be children or adults, male or female. Their traffickers can be strangers, romantic partners, family members, and even parents of any race, ethnicity, or gender.

It is, for the most part, a crime that hides in plain sight.

A common misunderstanding is that it involves smuggling people across borders. But trafficking and smuggling are different crimes.

Trafficking is done by individuals using force, fraud, or coercion to impel their victims into some type of labor or commercial sex act. In fact, trafficking is an extreme form of illegal exploitation.
