The terms “drug abuse” and “substance abuse” often hold the same meaning and will be used interchangeably throughout the course.  Additionally, the term “drug” refers to any legal or illegal mind-altering substance, including alcohol and over-the-counter, prescription, and illegal drugs.

The negative impact of substance abuse on productivity, safety, company assets, team morale, and customer service can potentially create adverse effects to both the business and the community.

Substance abuse can result in reduced employee productivity due to altered mental and emotional states. Employees who abuse alcohol or drugs are more likely to sleep on the job, struggle with concentration, and have difficulty maintaining attention.
